Crashes & Freezes
- The first thing to do is restart with extensions off (hold down the shift key after you restart until you see the "Extensions Off" message) and try to reproduce the problem.
If it doesn't crash anymore, then one of your system extensions is causing problems. You need to figure out which one. (Right off the bat you might suspect NOW software's various extensions. Although useful, they've been consistently buggy.)
A tool like Conflict Catcher it can assist in finding the culprit. Otherwise use the Extensions manager Control Panel. Turn off the first half of them (A-L, for example) and try to reproduce the error. If it is gone, then the problem is with one of those you just turned off. Try turning off the first quarter of them, and try again. This is called binary search---each time you cut your choices in half.
- If Textures crashes during startup, suspect either damaged fonts or font metrics. All of Textures' standard font metrics and screen font suitcases are available from our ftp server, and it can help to replace your existing fonts with those. Remove metrics from the TeX Fonts folder and fonts from your System Fonts folder (use the binary search method described above) to locate the offender.
- Does Textures give you the "I'm out of memory!" message? If so, Quit Textures. Find its icon in your Textures folder and click on it once so it turns black, then pick Get Info from the File menu. Find the box labelled "Preferred size" and type in a bigger number --- 4500K should be plenty for most things.
- Do you see a lot of "Type 11" error messages? These could be caused by bugs in Apple's system software, and most have been fixed in System 7.5.5. Updating your system software to this version or later may help.
