PICT to EPS
To transfer pictures from PICT to EPS, you need the LaserWriter driver installed on your Mac (which should already be there), and a copy of Adobe Illustrator.
To explain how to make a PICT into an EPS, we are going to use an example of a file with three PICT files included in it. You can download the PICT version of the TeX file to see how it works. Illustrator 8 is used to change things around.
- First, we are going to print each of the two pages to EPSF's using the LaserWriter 8 driver (EPSF stands for EPS File). First, make sure that you are using the LaserWriter 8 driver in your Chooser. Go into the Apple Menu and choose the Chooser, like so:
Selecting the Chooser from the Apple menu
- Select the LaserWriter 8 driver from the Chooser, as shown below. If you do not have the LaserWriter 8 driver, then you can download it from Apple, at the following site:
Selecting the LaserWriter 8 driver
- Close the Chooser window, and go back into Textures. You should get a dialog telling you that you have selected a new printer and you should choose "Page Setup" in all your open applications. Click OK and go back into Textures, going to the file menu, then to Page Setup if you got the warning message with the Chooser.
- Now, with the typeset window as the front window, select Print from the File menu, which will give you the following dialog box:
- Make the Destination pop-up menu "File", as shown below:
- Then select "Save As File" from the "General" pop-up menu, as shown below:
- In the "Save as File" area, we want to change the format to "EPS Mac Enhanced Preview", as shown below:
- And change the "Font inclusion" to all:
- Next, we go back to the General area, like so:
- Then select which page to print to, like so:
To print the second page, change the numbers to 2, etc.
- Now we are done, and can click the Save button.
- Prompted by the dialog of where to save the EPS, we write down whatever name we feel like since this page is not necessarily the final EPS file(s).
Do the above routines as many times as you have pages, remembering to select only one page at a time. Now, on how to remove those PICT's from each EPSF page, using Illustrator.
Select one of pieces in the image, and you will find the entire thing is grouped together, like so:
To resolve this, go into the Object menu and select Ungroup, as shown here:
Select one picture from the page, like so:
then make a new document by going into the File menu and doing "New". Drag the picture from the page EPSF to the new document, and you will find the picture in the new document, like so:
Now we save the new EPS image. Go into the File menu, select Save, and you will get the following "Save As" dialog box. Type in the file name that you want for the picture (making sure to end it in '.eps') and select the Illustrator EPS format, as shown below. Then, click the Save button.
You will be prompted with a dialog on which EPS format you want, but you want it in the default configuration (below), so just click OK.
If your PICT is a bitmap image (like the ones in the example document), you might be prompted about changing your color scheme to CMYK, as shown below. Click Continue.
Repeat the above steps for all the different pictures in the pages of your document, and you have converted from PICT to EPS.
You can download the example file in EPS.
